The haunted mesa Cover Image Book Book

The haunted mesa / Louis L'Amour.

Summary:

A mysterious adventure set in the contemporary American Southwest. Mike Raglan is summoned to No Man's Mesa located in Southwestern Utah near the San Juan River by a long time friend, Erik Horkart. Mike doesn't know for sure what it's all about but thinks it may have something to do with a map given him by a prospector a year before. Raglan's investigation of the mesa turns up a gate to a parallel universe. Crossing to the other side, he finds the river boat, Iron Duke, which disappeared after the Civil War. There are others who want to know the secret of the passage as well, and they are a ruthless bunch, who will stop at nothing to find it.
The Navajo called them the Anasazi, the "ancient enemy," and their abandoned cities haunt the canyons and plateaus of the Southwest. For centuries the sudden disappearance of these people baffled historians. Summoned to a dark desert plateau by a desperate letter from an old friend, renowned investigator Mike Raglan is drawn into a world of mystery, violence, and explosive revelations. Crossing a border beyond the laws of man and nature, he will learn of the astonishing world of the Anasazi and discover the most extraordinary frontier ever encountered.
